Mission Blueberry

We’re off this weekend to South Georgia. Deep South. Where the air’s a little sweeter, time moves a little slower and the best places are still found at the end of a dirt road.

We plan to grab some buckets and load up on fresh blueberries from my family’s farm, Bonnie Blueberries. The prettiest and sweetest blueberries around! This got me thinking back to last year during blueberry season, Blue Eyed Yonder had a week of Blueberry Bliss where readers contributed their favorite blueberry desserts and I selected a few to try out and share on the blog.

Everything’s bigger in Texas

 This was my very first time in Texas, and I have to say I pretty much fell in love. Everyone was so laid back and hospitable, it kind of reminded me of Georgia (but with a kick).

We stayed at the gorgeous Hotel San Jose. Everyone kept saying, “You’ve got to stay there!” So I had to see what all the fuss was about. It’s in the heart of the bustling South Congress district, but once you step behind the ivy walls, you are in a minimalist utopia. The simplistic rooms were furnished with the basics and featured concrete floors, lots of bright light and very cool furniture. It definitely has a fun, urban vibe, so if you’re into that kind of thing… go! I mean a hotel that offers polaroid cameras and retro typewriters for their guests to borrow? You really can’t go wrong.

Our main destination in Austin, was the insanely awesome Cream Event hosted by Bash, Please. Imagine a gorgeous, historic church turned wedding venue filled with some of Austin’s most outstanding wedding vendors jamming to the beat of Flashdance DJ. Umm yeah, insane!

I got to meet so many lovely ladies (and gents) and hung out with my vintage rental buddies from across the country. Oh, and no party is complete without acting like a total dork in the Smilebooth.

We often laughed and said we should try to eat our way through Texas. I know I’m from Georgia and think deep south cooking is the best, but Texas is coming in close, y’all! We had amazing coffee every morning at Jo’s, some of the best tex-mex at Guerro’s (you have to try their corn tortillas), late night pizza at Home Slice, snazzy pants dinner at Uchi (insanely delicious, but gotta admit, the teeny portions at Uchi can leave you with an itch for a little more food) so later… a second dinner at Lucy’s Fried Chicken. Hey, it’s vacation… don’t judge.

I loved seeing all the food trucks in Austin. From crepes, to cupcakes, to donut or tacos, you name it and Austin had it. Most of the food trucks were in adorable vintage airstreams, so of course I was loving it. I wish the food truck movement would ramp up in Atlanta, it’s such a quick and easy way to grab a bite while you’re on the go.

Last, but certainly not least, the vintage shops. We literally spent and entire day exploring Austin’s vintage scene. Maybe it’s a good thing we had to fly home, otherwise I’m pretty sure I would have given Mr. Blue Eyed Yonder the puppy dog eyes for lots of goodies. (And yes, that Chevy would have been at the top of the list.) There were so many wonderful vintage shops, there’s just no way to cram it all into one post.

Keep your eye out for my Austin Vintage Guide. I’ll let you know all the shops we visited plus a few others that are pretty neat. We may or may not have found the most ridiculous fir coats in all of Austin, you won’t want to miss it.

Halloween Parfait

Who says all Halloween treats have to be bad for you?

I was looking for a fun way to bring some Halloween colors into breakfast and decided on a black and white striped parfait. I spied these very dark colored dried raspberries in the bulk section at Whole Foods. Add a little pop of orange and voila!

Halloween Parfait
Vanilla Yogurt
Honey Granola
Dried Raspberries
Clementine (for garnish)
Layer the ingredients in a small glass and garnish with a slice of clementine.

Pumpkin Waffles

If you want your kitchen to be filled with the most wonderful aroma of baked pumpkin – make these pumpkin waffles! The house smelled so delicious and warm, the kind of morning where you just want to put on some fuzzy socks and curl up with a mug of hot chocolate.
We used this recipe from Smitten Kitchen, however substituted regular milk for buttermilk. We gave the waffles a little black and white Halloween flair with fresh blackberries and dollop of whipped cream. Delish!

Piece of Heaven

Oh lawdy! Is that a 13-layer cake? Why yes, yes it is.

Just had to share this heavenly picture. It’s littlest sister’s birthday cake and I’m pretty sure I dream about it every night. Thirteen layers of pure chocolate bliss.

Is there such thing as a 30-layer cake? Hmm…
